Since System 7 was introduced before the Internet came to popular attention, software such as MacTCP, FreePPP and Netscape were not included at first, but was later available on disk from Internet service providers and bundled with books such as Adam C. Later, the Macintosh Performa series added various software bundles including third-party software such as ClarisWorks, The New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Microsoft Bookshelf, Spectre VR and Power Pete.
Newly purchased Macintosh computers had System 7 installed and were often bundled with software such as HyperCard, At Ease and Mouse Practice.
Unlike earlier systems, System 7 itself did not come bundled with major software packages. Other operating systems like Linux may run, but are not officially supported. Supported Windows operating systems can run inside Virtual PC. Virtual PC virtualizes a standard PC and its associated hardware. The newest release, Windows Virtual PC, is available only for Windows 7 hosts. In August 2006 Microsoft announced the Macintosh-hosted version would not be ported to Intel-based Macintosh computers, effectively discontinuing the product as PowerPC-based Macintosh computers are no longer manufactured. In July 2006 Microsoft released the Windows-hosted version as a free product.
